Reader’s digestion

Dear customers, partners and friends of Newforma:

At Newforma, we’re continually talking to architects, engineers and contractors about their business needs and project processes. Then we synthesize the information and return it to the industry in the form of articles contributed to AEC publications. This issue of the Newforma Newsletter features a few such pieces – as food for thought, if you will. Plus we’ve added news, a case study and an appetite-provoking pictorial that will have you thinking about what to prepare for your next backyard grill. Dig in!

“Model-Based Design Requires More Than BIM”

In “The Voice,” the newsletter of the Construction User Roundtable, Newforma Chief Executive Officer Ian Howell discusses how it is becoming increasingly apparent that model-based design requires more than building information modeling alone. Citing practices in a variety of AEC disciplines, Ian describes how architecture, engineering and construction firms need to manage not just the geometric information in the model, but all the information about the project, as well. Read the article here.

“Managing the ‘I’ in BIM”

In Construction Executive magazine, Newforma Chief Executive Officer Ian Howell tells why no single building information model will contain all of the information about a building or infrastructure project. “The reality is that leading firms are creating a federation of purpose-built models, plural,” Ian says. Ian also describes the need for work processes that capture and share related project information that exists outside of these models. Read the article here.

“There Are Four P’s in Practice”

KA Connect is an annual event among AEC industry professionals who are using knowledge management to reinvent the way they build teams, develop methodology and leverage technology, all with the purpose of fostering a culture of organizational learning. In this video from the 2010 conference, Newforma Vice President Bob Batcheler shows the KA Connect tribe how to turn information into knowledge, and offers some must-read book recommendations along the way.

Smoking, barbecuing and the Atomic Recipe

Slow cooking is a great way to release more flavor from foods, and is especially effective in tenderizing meats. Smoking and barbecuing take slow cooking a step further by imparting their own magic onto the foods. In this pictorial feature, Newformants Dan Conery and Zak Ruck show how they practice the art, and offer a recipe to try at home. (Warning: If you were not planning to barbecue your next meal, you may want to change your plans after seeing Dan and Zak in action.
