Newforma company history

Newforma was founded in November 2003 by seven industry professionals who, as a team, have accumulated decades of software and AECO industry experience. Jesse Devitte of Borealis Ventures was Newforma’s seed investor. Bob Batcheler, Jim Forester, Todd Kozikowski, Larry Nuttall, Dave Plunkett and Allen Preger have, at various points in their careers, worked together to define, develop and market popular technical software applications, some of which are still used today by leading architecture and engineering companies.

Team members re-united at Newforma to fill the need for technology that would help architects and engineers better manage their project delivery processes. The team invested many months capturing customer requirements, validating a product strategy and preparing the business plan that culminated in Series A funding in May 2004 lead by North Bridge Venture Partners and Kodiak Ventures.

With Series A funding in hand, Chief Executive Officer Ian Howell and the founders recruited a high-performing development team and continued to work closely with leading firms in the industry to further define and validate detailed product specifications, resulting in the limited release of Newforma Project Center First Edition to a number of “Lighthouse Customers” in May 2005.

Over the remainder of 2005, Newforma successfully completed a Series B round and captured feedback from these early customers, who were using Newforma Project Center on live building and infrastructure projects.

Newforma Project Center had its commercial debut in June, 2006. Newforma completed a successful Series C round in March of 2007 in order to hire additional sales and marketing resources to accelerate revenue growth. As of January 2009, more than 28,000 users were managing over 120,000 projects in Newforma Project Center. Initial customers included forward-thinking firms of all sizes, from Perkins+Will and HOK to Jordan, Jones & Goulding and Grunley Construction Company to Mackey Mitchell Architects and Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions.

In 2011, Newforma expanded its AEC project information management solution with four new products: Newforma® Mobile, Newforma® Contract Management, Newforma® Add-in for Autodesk® Revit® and Newforma Project Analyzer

As of January 2012, Newforma customers comprised more than 52,000 licensed users in 644 companies across 10 countries, using Newforma Project Center as a mission-critical enterprise application to manage in excess of 700,000 projects.
